Any organisation must act quickly, this is especially true for political organisations. Show political organisations do not achieve anything.
The slow parts of a political organisation firstly become relegated to a ratification role and then, evenutally, they even lose much of that power as the executive drives ahead with necessary activity.
Traditionally in left wing organisations, the membership has attempted to control the power of the executive by limiting their supreme directors to administrative duties supposedly divorced from policymaking. However, because there is always latitude in how administration is handled, even allegedly executive groups which dont meet often enough can have their power usurped by full time administrators, and this has been clear in the example of the NEC meeting of 12th July where illegitimate meeting rules, tactical filibustering to generate fatigue, hiding of legal advice, selective legal advocacy, late disclosure of the agenda and several other tactics were employed not just by parts of the NEC itself, but also by the General Secretary.
It is therefore critical that meetings happen as often as is practicable. Without that, offline meetings lose continuity, direction, focus and most importantly, control of whatever administrative or executive body the organisation has.
Online meetings are far cheaper and easier to hold than offline ones. Offline meetings require a real world venue, food, drink, transport and pre meeting communication. Face to face meetings often therefore happen occasionally and insufficiently frequently to be effective.
Currently, we have a regularly updated watsapp group and i propose that this group meets to discuss things weekly. This means that anyone with a smart phone can participate by finding a free wireless hotspot in a pub, cafe or library. Smartphnes can be purchased for as little as 40 pounds and sim cards for as little as 10.
I further propose that an exec that meets at least 2 daily is elected by the weekly group. The weekly group self select by patrticipation, and the normal face to face meetings get to see the minutes of the weekly and exec groups and vote to prevent people having a vote or permit people a double vote between meetings and only until the next face to face meeting.
This permits optimal control of the executive and optimal freedom of the executive between meetings while ensuring the inclusion of even those who cant afford smart phone in the only way they have avalable to them- snail mail, which cnan be used to remotely move and vote for a motion, and face to face meetings. The cheapest and easiest ways of participating for those with a technological phobia.
Responses are welcome.
