"How do we convince people that Jeremy Corbyn’s agenda still matters?
We need to focus on convincing Labour members and trade union affiliates during the election
The arguments against Jeremy Corbyn are:
He is unelectable;
Support for his a personality cult;
He is responsible for Brexit;
He cannot lead without support of the PLP
Our responses can be:
Labour has won all four by-elections contested under his leadership;
Corbyn is in favour of real representative democracy;
About two thirds of Labour supporters, voted Remain;
The PLP created the rift (and the timing of their challenge is unproductive)
Resources:
We need to go beyond Corbyn to discussing policies;
New Economics lectures;
They Work for You website;
LSE report on media bias
Having a flyer/fact sheets with arguments and counterarguments along these lines would be helpful for stalls etc.
How do we engage with Labour?
Hackney South CLP has all-member General Meetings and Hackney North CLP has delegate General Meetings. These need different approaches to engagement.
In both CLPs we need to focus on increasing the engagement of new members at all levels, from ward meetings to Executive Committee officers.
Some suggested ideas for doing this:
Offer training focused on how the Labour Party works;
Contact new members of Labour through Momentum to encourage them to take part and put them in touch with other people in their ward;
Create a network of people on the left across the wards in each CLP to share motions, ideas etc (use relevant online tools to support this e.g. Whatsapp, Dropbox);
Develop Momentum Labour Engagement Officers at ward level (in addition to CLP level as at present)
Having a facility on the Momentum website to find your ward would be helpful.
Many of the priorities for the leadership campaign were covered by other groups but the group that focused on this, also mentioned:
Phonebanking (locally, at Unite in Holborn, via the Momentum online app)
We need to do outreach to other organisations to make the case for Corbyn as leader
We need to increase Trade Union membership and to get all people who were TU members on 12 January to sign up as affiliates by 8 August"
